With the end of 2017, so ends that year’s daily project: illustrating a Canadian of note (past or present) every single day. You can see the results of the project, #365Canadians, by checking out that hashtag on Twitter or Instagram, or taking a look at the composite of all 365 Canadians right here. Not content to go another day without another daily project, this January sees the revival of my semi-regular horror movie marathon, 31 (More) Days of Fright. You generous friends and donors raised $1,500 for the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape. And with my new job at Penguin Random House Canada, they match donation efforts, so you’ll have (actually) raised $3,000 for the TRCC / MWAR. Congratulations, you wonderful people! You’re helping to fund many TRCC/MWAR’s resources, including a 24-hour crisis line, counselling, and court support!
If you missed out on the fundraising portion of this project, you can always donate directly to the Toronto Rape Crisis Centre / Multicultural Women Against Rape here. As part of the fundraiser, anyone who donated $30 or more were given the power to select one of the thirty-one horror movies I will be watching and writing about this first month of 2018. So get ready to be disturbed, unsettled, grossed-out, and probably a bit confused.
Below, please find the lineup of movies for this January’s 31 (More) Days of Fright screenings. I haven’t seen any of them before, save one (What We Do in the Shadows) which was strongly recommended – one might even say demanded – by one generous donor.

As with past years, this list should represent a decent spectrum, of genres, eras, cultures. And also as in past years, if we’re friends on Facebook, I might hold a couple a couple ‘public’ screenings, if you want to join me for a couple of these horror movie screenings. Or just message me if there’s a particular film you’ve been dying to watch with someone. As with my previous two horror-movie binges, prepare for inane daily write-ups – review seems far too generous – that will outline the films on such criteria as
- what happens
- takeaway points
- judgment: truly terrifying or truly terrible?
- best outfit
- best line
- unexpected cameo
- unexpected lesson learned
- most suitable band name derived from the movie
Stay tuned for more 31 (More) Days of Fright updates throughout January. If you’d like to take a look at the previous collection of 31 Days of Fright write-ups, you can find them all here, though you’ll forgive me for a few broken image links that didn’t survive the switch over to a new web platform. (I’m slowly fixing those broken links.) I’ll kick things off on January 2 with a write-up on The Boy, as suggested by my wife and best friend Meg Campbell. See you there!
